Pentachlorophenol (CASRN 87-86-5) is a wide spectrum biocide that has been used extensively, primarily as a fungicidal wood preservative, in the United States and elsewhere since the mid1930s. In 1987 the U.S. EPA restricted the use of pentachlorophenol to non-residential use, primarily to the treatment and preservation of utility poles and cross arms, railroad ties, wharf pilings, and laminated beams and fence posts.
